Places to Visit and Fun Things to Do Near Castlegar This Summer

As the summer heat hits and the kids are out of school, Castlegar Toyota knows you’ll be needing awesome day (or longer) trips to eat up all that free time. Tire your crew out and have tonnes of fun doing it by checking out some of our favourite drivable locations and activities that need to be on every adventure family’s must-do list this season. Come along as we give you the rundown of places all over BC’s interior that your kids will go crazy for.

1 - Clock Time at Red Mountain

Sure -- you’re used to taking your munchkins to Red when the snow flies, but have you ever explored Rossland’s crown jewel during warmer months? With awesome events like mountain biking, dirt biking, running events and even a wine festival for the moms and dads, Red Mountain is a world-class resort that you might have overlooked because it’s basically in our backyard. Don’t miss out and be sure to hit up Red Mountain for a major dose of unspoiled fun.

2 - Escape to Kaslo

Slow things down a bit by escaping the bustle of summer in the city by checking out the quaint mountain village of Kaslo. When your fam isn’t out on the postcard-esque lake, you’ll find yourselves bike riding, taking in some jazz in the park or simply walking the streets and absorbing the incredible views that surround you. Want to stick around? Check into the Kaslo Municipal Campground and hold on to those good times for as long as you can.

3 - Burn Off Energy at Idaho Peak

For a day hike like no other, make the quick trek north to Idaho Peak where breathtaking views and untamed nature await your family. If your wee punks are more tot than teen, worry not! While there are longer hikes, the main path up the peak is only 1.5 km long and covers easy terrain. Strap on those boots, pack some snacks and hit the trails for the best day out you’ve had in a long time.

4 - Sleep in the Woods at Beaver Creek

Just a quick drive from Castlegar and only moments away from the Trail BC airport, Beaver Creek Provincial Park is a stellar place to get out in the woods with your family. Bike, hike or cast a line out into the river while you’re there and enjoy the lush forest that surrounds you. Nights under the stars of Beaver Creek will be sure to turn into memories your children will hold onto for a lifetime.

5 - Soak Up Rays at Sun Oka

For a perfect summer day, pack up the towels, umbrella and snacks and head straight to Sun Oka Beach Provincial Park in Summerland. For a mere $3, your kiddos can spend the day splashing in the water, digging in the sand and swinging on the playground. Beach fire pits make it easy to turn your day excursion into an evening outing -- plus they’re perfect for marshmallow roasting! Don’t want to leave your fur-kid at home? There’s even a rocky dog beach here that doubles as a prime spot for rock collecting.
